Accountability is a bad word?

I recently responded to a text message about individuals using a community resource. I was about to use the word, “accountability” when my brain automatically paused and considered how the word would be received. It was the correct word to convey my intended meaning. So why did my subconscious stop to consider using something different?

Apparently, the word accountable is now associated with punishment, coercion and a host of other negative behaviors. It wasn't always this way was it? It seems that accountability could be used in the past. To me it's still just a word that means keeping commitments, using proper behavior, and acknowledging when we fall short. It doesn't have to be a negative experience.

Feedback isn't comfortable for most people, but it is necessary. When a wrong occurs it must be righted. If a mess is made it must be cleaned up.  I worry that the change in connotation coincides with a trend of unwillingness to be true to our commitments or to act properly.

I believe accountability is a great thing. Let's not allow our standards to be eroded. Let us admit our faults, right our wrongs, and try to be better. Let us be kind in teaching ourselves and others to be responsible.
